Gardening Programs
DINE for LIFE runs gardening programs in schools that either have a school garden or have interest in running garden programs for their students. Garden programs help nutritionists take nutrition outside and provide students with another hands-on activity to learn about nutrition. See below for the most recent gardening events:
- Container Gardening: To
further encourage one of the core nutrition messages of increasing
fruit and vegetable intake, nearly 400 students and staff at YE Smith
Elementary School potted patio tomatoes in containers at school to take
home for the summer. Along with their potted tomato plants, students
took a trowel and watering cup, tomato recipes, home care instructions, and a log for tracking plant growth production and usage. See the article in the Herald Sun.
- Salad
Days/Fruity Days: At Watts Elementary School, gardening was taken one
step further: a farm-to-table program. Fruits, vegetables, and herbs
were harvested from the garden for students to use in the preparation of
healthy recipes such as Radish Avocado Salsa, Veggie Dip, Green Salad with Herb Salad Dressing, Grilled Tomato Basil and Cheese Sandwiches, and Green Smoothies.
